RM: I noticed you and Craig looking at each other a lot. The less you play, the more they hear. Now, I'm using two 20" bass drums, 10", 12" and 14" power toms on top of the kit, 16" and 18" floor toms, and an 8 x 14 wood-shell snare drum, which is really a good,.sounding drum. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? I did not like it, one bit. And, then after that, I continued looking for doctors, maybe hoping Id hear what I wanted to hear. So John said, "Well, we've got a gig tomorrow night. . Electronically, you have to be careful with that because you've got electronic components in there that are going to get smashed if you hit them too hard. I've decided in my ownhead what sells records and what doesn't. . And it was really, really great to see everybody. You work on something for so many years, and you attain what you attain, which was an amazing feat, and then its sort of like the rug is pulled out from under you. I didnt have that under my belt. During the time I was with Bowie, I also did Nils Lofgren's first solo album. Anybody who plays in a group must realize that everybody in the group must always be aware of everybody else. You get in a baseball team and some people like each other and some people hate each other, but they still play together. Especially Journey and Foreigner. Dont crack the stone. I moved over there. Dunbar began his career on the British blues-rock scene, playing with Champion Jack Dupree and Eddie Boyd before becoming the drummer for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in 1967; he was influenced by jazz and the Who's Keith Moon as well. Of all the hits Journey had, why is that the one that seems to resonate the most? I thought what they were doing was interesting, but what I didn't realize was that what they tend to do is copy themselves. He 'will sort of jump out and start putting ideas down which I often jump on. He gave me the back bedroom at his place. As soon as I went backstage after the Berkeley concert, the crew and band told me that Aynsley and Terry were there hanging out. I was concerned that it would play while somebody got whacked. His playing always has a bit of a flair to it, but I think he's always a supportive musician and he doesn't overplay. _[laughs] _I cant believe that this is news. Also known as "The Hawk". A lot of them are criticizing you because they are frustrated musicians. It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. Actually Jonathan Cain tried to go down and go in and see him in San Francisco and they wouldnt let him in the building! In January 1987, it was . So they thought that I would be a good addition to the band. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. And their friend was kind of hovering over them with a camera. I told him l never sign contracts that are one-sided. I'd like to sit at home and work on that sort of stuff. But thats okay. I cant speak for them. They wanted to make it without one. Dunbar was asked by Kantner to leave in 1982, with Donny Baldwin taking his place in September. Theyre all magical to me.
